A friend introduced me to the Constructivist Narkomfin building today (1928-1932), built for workers of the People’s Commissariat of Finance.  Amazing. It’s falling apart now, but it was one of the first experiments in semi-communal living (no kitchens in the apartments, a solarium for communal use, public gardens, etc..) and predated a lot of Le Corbusier’s most famous work, even as it was built according to his five principles. It’s been on the World Monuments Watch list before and there is talk about preserving it as a hotel. (See http://www.wmf.org/project/narkomfin-building)
